The 2018 Camp Fire forever changed the community of Paradise, but through determination, innovation, and strong partnerships, citizens and various organizations have been instrumental in leading the town’s recovery. The Paradise Recreation and Park District (PRPD) also holds a surprisingly key role in these efforts, stretching beyond the typical role of a Park and Rec District.
This session offers an in-depth look at how parks and recreation have become cornerstones in physically, emotionally, and socially rebuilding the community. Attendees will learn how PRPD’s collaborative approach with community organizations, schools, volunteers, and local agencies became a "secret sauce" in recovery and resiliency efforts.
We will explore key initiatives, such as developing a multi-benefit Wildfire Risk Reduction Buffer, restarting youth sports programs, and implementing innovative resiliency programs designed to support the mental health of Paradise's youth. Personal stories from our Recreation Supervisors will offer insight into the emotional and professional challenges of navigating disaster recovery. Additionally, we will dive into PRPD’s coordination of volunteer efforts and events, the role of nature and forest therapy programs in healing the community, and lessons learned during this unprecedented crisis.
This session will provide attendees with practical insights into disaster recovery, community partnerships, and the development of new programs that promote resilience in post-disaster environments. Presenters will share real-world lessons that other districts can use to strengthen their own emergency preparedness and community engagement efforts.
From building future parks to envisioning the future of Paradise, this 90-minute session provides a blueprint for disaster recovery and a powerful example of how parks and recreation agencies restore hope and bring a community back to life. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from staff leaders on the role of collaboration, innovation, and resilience in the face of one of California’s most destructive wildfires.
