Communities everywhere are demanding more from their park systems – and inclusive playgrounds are at the top of their wish list! But what does it mean to build play spaces that are truly inclusive? You have probably heard the buzzwords: inclusive, accessible, all-abilities, and multi-generational playgrounds – but what does it all mean?
In this informative session, participants will gain an understanding of what it means to design a park that is truly inclusive and how agencies can go beyond the buzzwords to meet the needs of their community. The session will begin by expanding participants’ definitions of inclusive play, exploring how to move beyond minimal compliance to design environments that engage diverse user groups holistically. Led by landscape architects with expertise in inclusive playground design, the session will provide valuable insights on how to design for various user groups and how to avoid common design pitfalls. Through real-world case studies, participants will discover practical strategies for creating inclusive parks that balance community priorities with budget and maintenance constraints. To close, participants will dive into a hands-on, interactive activity where they will test their knowledge on how to bring inclusive park concepts to life in their own communities.
