Session Description:

One way to engage the community is to create opportunities for people to volunteer in leadership roles. If done correctly, this is a great way to build capacity for events, outreach, and programs. What if you had Parks & Recreation Ambassadors?

In this session, we’ll introduce the concept of volunteer leaders.  We’ll examine the different types of volunteers and how volunteer leaders can help build capacity in both event implementation and program delivery. We’ll identify the characteristics of a volunteer leader and ways to utilize them.  We’ll also introduce tools to help staff set their volunteers up for success.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore volunteerism as a community engagement tool to build programs, events, and partnerships in your community
  • Recognize the difference between worker bees and volunteer leaders so you can utilize them most appropriately; and understand the characteristics of a leadership volunteer and what they’d consider meaningful work
  • Collaborate to create a list of ways you might utilize volunteer leaders and where you might find them in your community
