Recreation Supervisor
City of Brisbane
Brisbane, California
Nicole Houghton is a dedicated parks and recreation professional with 17 years in the field specializing in youth programming, events, aquatics, and older adult activities. Her career has been marked by a deep commitment to community engagement and improving the quality of life for individuals of all ages. Nicole is inspired by connection as is evidenced by her many years of advocacy and support within CPRS and as the current District 4 President.
In 2023, Nicole faced a profound personal loss with the passing of one of her best friends who battled clinical depression and had been recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. That experience has shaped her perspective and fueled her passion for mental health advocacy. Nicole has actively sought new ways to raise awareness and to support open dialogues and mental health initiatives within her community. She has collaborated with San Mateo County's Center for Age Friendly Excellence and has organized & attended mental health events throughout the Bay Area. Nicole aspires to honor her friend's memory while simultaneously creating supportive communities for all.
More time spent in parks and green spaces can help individuals fight against mental health issues like depression, anxiety, social isolation, and stress (NRPA, Parks and Improved Mental Health and Quality of Life). As recreation professionals, we all play an integral role in these ongoing conversations. Nicole believes that sharing our own personal stories and narratives is essential for building community resilience and compassion. She looks forward to meeting and hearing from you!
