When you least expect it, the worst case scenario strikes. In 2020, NOR's largest pool was closed due to the contamination of asbestos and a flurry of activity commenced with notification letters, public information requests, insurance, abatement...oh my! Five years later, we revisit the successes, challenges and best management practices we learned along the way. This session will provide insight on public records requests, working with legal counsel, documentation, environmental response and remediation, consultant contracting, insurance and bringing in subject matter experts. Learn about the actions taken within the recreation division, public relations and in planning, operations and maintenance that contributed to an integral agency response. Finally, we'll look at the NOR pool today and what the future of the site looks like.
Learning Objectives:
Participants at this session will come out with a sample of order of operations on what to do in the case of a facility disaster.
Participants will understand the value of knowing/having a specialized consultants, such as an environmental consultant, and the value of second or even third opinions when that *gut feeling* lets you know that something isn't right.
Participants will come away with the importance of collaboration with insurance, legal counsel and agency staff for a clean investigation.
