From Abandoned Car Dealership to Community Gem: The CPRS Award-Winning Dusterberry Park

Session Description: The planning and community-based design of Dusterberry Park is a rags to riches story. An abandoned and contaminated car dealership site with a 32,000sf building in a critically underserved area had become an eyesore after decades of deterioration. The neighborhood was apprehensive of creating a park in the location. After several months of community outreach, the City of Fremont staff won the trust of the residents, and together, they designed the park of their dreams and won the vaunted CPRS Design of Excellence award in 2024.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will learn about what the City of Fremont is doing to create better park equity throughout the city.
  • Participants will learn about the City's marketing methods for getting robust community participation.
  • Participants will learn about the City's CPRS Award-winning innovative methods of changing community perception, gaining trust, and eliciting creative, thoughtful, and meaningful input from the community and using it to create a park that really fit their needs.
